Motorcycle Repair: Honda xl125 wont start, honda xl125, pilot jet

Question
I did get going by pouring some fuel in through the sparkplug hole and ran fine. When I go back 2 hours later again not able to kick start

Answer
Ken,

these bikes need a good battery
to run and most have contact
points under the left top engine cover.
You didn't mention what year it was.

It may have a plugged idle pilot jet
in the carb.
The jets are small and need to be
carefully checked for obstructions.

The points are gapped at about .014"
and they should just break open
with the "F" mark on the flywheel
rotor aligned with the mark on the
engine case. Make sure the points
are clean.

Check for ample fuel flow
to the carb from the gas tank.

Use a good spark plug and check
the plug cap for around 5000 ohms
resistance.

If your spark looks good and your
carb is clean it should start
unless the engine compression is low
or some other odd condition exists.
The valve clearance is set about .002"
Check for loose camshaft on the points end as these are known
to wear in the head and cause misfires.
