Motorcycle Repair: new regulator dead already?, ac volts, stator

Question
QUESTION: i installed a new stator and regulator less than 2 months ago. battery died about 2 weeks ago but it was old so i replaced it without checking anything else. new battery dying now. Checked voltage at battery and it is overcharging. resistance at across the pins of stator is 1 ohm(if i am doing the test right). so this means the reg. is shot, right? How can this be. is there an underlying cause?

ANSWER: What is the voltage at the battery whne the bike is running? Test ground to pin on the stator. What OHMs do you get? What AC voltage are you getting from the stator?

QUESTION: thanks mike. just got your reply now and its too late to start the bike and piss off the neighbours but from last nights test the volts at the battery with the bike running were rising as i revved from 13 to 16 or 17 volts. testing ground to sator pin seems to give no reading. AC voltage- can't remember the numbers and i don't have a rev counter but ac voltage at stator is definitely rising as i rev the engine. definitely putting out more than 16 volts but i can check for more definite reading tomorrow.

Answer
Your stator should be putting out around 60 AC volts, so you need to test it. Make sure youa re testing AC volts, not DC. You should get no OHMs from ground to either pin, but test both pins. Since you are burning up regulators I would pull the stator and inspect it. You might have a bare wire that it bumping the case.
