Motorcycle Repair: clutch adjustment problems, clutch adjustment, clutch plates

QUESTION: I built a custom softail and i cant adjust the clutch properly. I tried by the book,from advice and almost to the point of taking it in. It wont disengage when in gear and i pull the clutch lever.Fluid is at proper level.

ANSWER: When you pull the lever do you see the clutch plates moving outward?

Did you presoak the clutch plates? If you didnt they will stick. :If you did try this adjustment. Loosen the adjuster on the cable, so it has slack in it. Now go to the clutch adjuster and turn it inward, intil it bottoms. Make sure it bottoms. Back it out just a hair. Now adjust the cable so you have about 1/8 inch play in the lever.
