Motorcycle Repair: Cycle battery, vent tube, sealed batteries

Question
I have a '67 Triumph 650. I have a new battery in. I am wondering if I plug the vent tube up, so no acid drips down the tube, will it do any damage to anything? I noticed car batteries that are not maintenance-free(not sealed), do not have a vent tube.  Also what is the purpose of the vent anyway as sealed batteries do not have one. Thanks, Mike

Answer
Batters produce gas as the battery does it thing.Car batters don't have the vibration that a motorcycle has. They also have a vent in each cap but they don't leak acid because they aren't subjected to the vibration of a motorcycle battery. Just extend the vent tube down below the bottom of the frame.DO NOT PLUG UP THE TUBE.Most sealed batteries have a gel in them.
