Motorcycle Repair: 1987 Honda Magna v45 clutch slips, honda magna v45, barnett clutch

Question
I just bought an 87 Magna 700. It rides fine when I am around the neighborhood until it warms up. The clutch starts to slip and then it will not pull at all. I bought a new barnett clutch the other day and installed with no problems. I rode around let it warm up and no problems. I needed to ride it a long distance recently and got about 10 miles down the road and it stopped pulling. I took it apart again and found no problem except the pressure plate has about a 1/4 inch of play and did not know if that was normal. Anyways I can't for the life of me figure out what to do. This is my first bike in almost 15 years and it is pissing me off that I can't ride. Is this a problem the older magna's had? What do you think it is? My hands are tied please help me.
