Motorcycle Repair: exhaust, honda varadero, valve clearances

Question
i have a honda varadero its a 125
lately my bike has got louder, lost power it struggles up hills and the acceleration has gone
i heard it might be due to the exhaust or air filters being blocked, is there a CHEAP way to fix this ?

could it be something else ? ?

Answer
Anthony....  Do a tune-up on it first!  I would definitely check the valve clearances and adjust the camchain, if that is an option. We don't have this model in the US, so I don't know much about them. Changed the spark plug lately? Be sure the spark plug cap is on tight. If the bike is older and/or has a lot of miles on it, the resistor inside the plug cap can go off out of range. Should be around 5k ohms.

On older 125s the valve clearances are .002" for both valves. If the clearances close down, the compression is lost, hopefully not forever.

Do check the air filter, the petcock filter/fuel filter, drain the carburetor to see if you picked up some moisture in the fuel tank which needs to be drained out.

Doubt the exhaust would have much to do with it, unless it collapsed internally or you crashed the bike and dented the muffler/silencer or header pipe.

One other possibility is if the CDI ignition module isn't advancing the spark properly. Fairly rare, though, but possible.

Get a compression check if you can, before and after adjusting the valves to see if you have a change in the readings.
