Motorcycle Repair: Harley Starter, starter solenoid, 1972 flh

Question
I have a 1972 FLH HD Shovelhead, when trying to start the bike I am only getting a clicking sound near the relay.  The starter is fine and the relay is getting 12 volts to it, cables look good.  On the back of the battery tray there is what looks like a relay with a black on one side and a red wire on the other, can you tell me what it is? Also, what else can I look at or check? Thank you

Answer
That relay you are refering to on the battery tray is the starter relay. Check the starter solenoid when you push the starter button to see if you have power going to it. If not, the the starter relay is bad, if you do then the starter solenoid is bad.
Good luck and happy riding
