Motorcycle Repair: 1990 ZX-7 Kawasaki, metal shavings, cam chains

Question
There is a ticking/ knocking comming from the engine! The bike has 27K miles and runs really strong! There are no metal shavings in the oil! I know its not a rod knock becasue the noise will go away on occasion! I just can't figure out where the noise is comming from? I've heard this ticking noise on other Kawasaki's as well! I would like to fix the noise but just do not know what the hell it is,lol... If you have any info on where I can start to trouble shoot this? It would be very appreciated!
Than-x Daniel

Answer
Daniel,

get a mechanic stethoscope or a long screwdriver,
put in on your ear and listen at various
locations on the engine. See if you can pinpoint
the area the sound comes from or is the loudest.
Some bikes have oil pump chains and balancer chains
and of course cam chains that can tick.
Also valve clearance or clutch basket rattles.
If you can narrow down the area maybe it will be
easier to find.
