Motorcycle Repair: 87 Vulcan 750, vulcan 750, clutch basket

Question
Hi Wayne,   I just bought a Vulcan 750. I can hear a chain slapping inside the case... Can I take up on the tensioners to quiet this down?   Thanks, Vic

Answer
Vic,

the tensioners are automatic for the
most part. Some places make aftermarket
parts for manual adjustment or extending
the tensioner effective distance.

-Have you used a stethescope or sounding
rod (long screwdriver)to pinpoint the noise?
The Vulcan has been known to have clutch
basket noise (no big deal) and it has an internal oil pump
chain, which requires case splitting to change.

-The Vulcan has two cam drive chains per cylinder
and the tensioner parts could be worn.

-The best thing is to try to isolate the noise location
to better diagnose which part(s) are the problem.
