Motorcycle Repair: 1990 FLTUC, cv carb, stock harley

Question
Mike,
I just purchased a 1990 FLTUC with 80,000 on the clock. It's been thru 2 previous owners. The second bought it w/35K. The bike starts, idles and seems to run and excellerate normal for a 800lb. bike. I think it has a stock Harley (CV)carb. Over all not as responsive as my 1998 FXD but acceptable.

The previous owner claims the engine is stock and hasn't been rebuilt. It doesn't smoke. There is a weep/leak at the base of the front cyl. where it meets the block.

Past owner claims clutch is original. There are no shifting problems.

My plan is to go over the bike this winter doing normal maintenance (change fluids;engine-trans-brake-forks/adjust clutch/drive chain/ using the HD service manual I have and also make some changes for comfort & looks.

I plan on using this bike for putting around and riding to the beach in the summer about 2 hour highway ride.

I was planning on doing a compression test, I have the tools so I can see where its at.

My opinion is that if it ain't broke don't fix it but should I be looking deeper at something or doing anything more?

Thank you!

Answer
You going in the right direction. A couple of things I would do, however since the motor has never been worked on. With 80,000 miles I would replace the cam bearing as well as the bearings on the lifters. If any of these bearings go out the rollers go into the oil pump and damage it beyond repair
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
