Question
Having problems kick starting. Sometin=mes its very easy and other times it kicks my but. can you help

Answer
Buck, Thumpers can be pretty fussy about lighting off.

Make sure that the engine is in a perfect state of tune.
Adjust the valves and then adjust the compression release cable, to ensure that it is functioning properly.

The carburetor idle jet needs to be clean and clear. Idle mixture screw should be set properly, so that the hot idle is just right. You have that nightmare double carb system, which includes an air cut valve. If that diaphragm gets damaged you will have an air leak that will cause a lot of problems. All the vacuum lines to the intake system should be inspected for damage or loose connections. Verify float level settings. They may not be adjustable, depending on the type of float design. I don't have specs for these bikes.

How many miles on the engine? Compression okay? Is it using oil? If the plug is getting partially fouled by oil deposits, incorrect metering from the carburetor or is just old, then it will certainly make starting more difficult.

for illustrations of the parts.

Check the choke enrichener system. If the plungers get damaged or the the metering passage gets plugged up, the choke won't operate correctly.

Never hurts to check the spark plug cap resistance and be sure you are using the correct heat range spark plug.

Usually the rule on 4 stroke singles is to put the choke on, kick the motor over gently, until it rotates just past TDC on the compression stroke, then kick it HARD with NO throttle! If the idle speed is set too low, that will aggravate the problems, too.

I think there is a website just for XR Hondas... www.xrsonly.com that may be helpful for you, too.
