Motorcycle Repair: Evo breather gear, gearcase, itsself

Question
Mike
I decided to install an EV27 cam in my '97 evo and also change the INA cam bearing at the same time. I pulled the old bearing out but found that a part of the outer cage was missing!!! If this has fallen into the crankcase (don't see where else it could have gone)would it be sensible to fit an S&S breather gear (which seems to have a fine mesh as opposed to the slots in the OEM gear)to hopefully stop the debris from entering the oil pump from the gearcase?

Any other suggestions which may help short of splitting the crankcases to remove the offending metal?
Many thanks.

Answer
About the only thing you will be able to do is split the cases. If you run the bike without cleaning the metal out you could damage a crank bearing or it will go into the oil pump. Once it get into the oil pump it will damage the pump housing. even though the S&S breather has small holes, if the metal gets ground up it will still go past the breather. Also, you might get a piece of metal in the breather hole itsself and damage the case where the breather gear goes.
Happy holidays
