Motorcycle Repair: Front fork scratch removal, honda shadow vlx, emery cloth

Question
Hello:  I recently bought a '95 Honda Shadow VLX, and the upper portion of both front forks have a lot of scratches from gravel, etc.  Is there anyway to remove the scratches, or is it necessary to replace that portion of the forks?  Thank you very much.

Answer
Dave,

the forks usually need to be replaced unless
the scratches are very minor. The forks
have chrome plating that may be damaged
by abrasives.

-Some fine emery cloth and oil may work
to smooth it out or even a Mr. Clean "magic eraser"
works on rust and minor imperfections.

-it may lose it's shiny look from any
harsh cleaning but you could
try buffing it well but don't apply
any wax or polish in the area where
the fork seals travel.

-If the scratches are in the seal area
above the lower fork leg the seals
may be leaking or may start leaking soon.
