Motorcycle Repair: im having trouble with my dirtbike, suzuki rm 80, oil filler cap

Question
alright, my dad bought me a Suzuki RM 80 for my birthday, but he bought it used and it ran fine for about a month or so then my dad told me not to touch it and he would have it fixed but he dosent know whats wrong with it and to make a long story short, its been sitting for about a year and a half and it takes forever for me to start it up (kick starting) i mean it will act like it wants to start, but it wont start and once it does start up it blows out a lot of smoke and it stalls within a minute! my mom thinks it the carberator and my dad thinks it not holding compression i told this guy i know about it and he told me that he thinks it needs new pistons or new seal caps on the carberator, does that sound right? and what are you thoughts..what should i do. or do u know whats wrong with it?

Answer
Frank,

were you premixing gas and two stroke oil
in this bike or does it have a separate
oil tank? If you premix it should be about 4 ounces of
good two stroke oil in a gallon of gas.

-You will need to dump the old fuel after it sitting
this long.

-also carb jets can tend to plug up after
sitting as well. You may have to clean the
jets with a small piece of guitar string
or such. Blow out all the carb passages with
compressed air.

-make sure fuel is coming out of the tank and
gas line well. Clean as necessary.

-hold a finger tightly over the spark plug hole
and see if it has pressure when you kickstart it.
or use a compression gauge, should have over 100psi.

-finally if your fresh gas/oil mixture doesn't
help to reduce the smoking it is possible
the crankshaft seal on the clutch side
is leaking and sucking trans oil in to the engine.
This is the side where your transmission
oil filler cap is. The seal is near the front
and under the crankshaft gear.

-Be careful not to damage the new seal
if you try to tap one in. Use a big socket
the same size as the outside of the seal
or a piece of pvc plastic pipe.
