Motorcycle Repair: 1999 YZF 600-R6 Yamaha, oil pressure gauge, yzf 600 r6

Question
Wayne, I recently replaced the clutches in the bike and changed the oil and filter. The bike sat for about 2 months with the crankcase empty of oil. When I finally got it started I have no oil pressure. Any ideas?  Thanks, Andy

Answer
Andy,

-is it just your oil level light that is on?

-Probably the oil level switch just got sticky
from being dry. Not much you can do
other than pulling it out or waiting
to see if it loosens up on it's own.

-There is an oil pressure plug on the
left bottom side of the engine in front of the oil filter.

-An oil pressure gauge can be hooked up there
with the right fittings. Should have
approx 34 psi at 6000 rpm

-If you don't have this equipment handy
you can do a messy oil pressure check,
just crack the oil filter loose,
it will shoot oil out and you will
know there is pressure. Very messy.

-Better yet, maybe crack the oil pressure
test plug slightly and rev the bike,
could be messy too. This doesn't
tell you how much pressure you have
but at least you will know the oil
is circulating.

-make sure your oil has not been thinned out
by a carb leak or such.
