Motorcycle Repair: float bowl leak, honda ct70, petcock

Question
i have a '81 honda ct70 that runs good with choke fully on but when choke is off it the rpm's wont rise when cracking the throttle open sharply, just bogs. i beleive i have a very small float bowl gasket leak because it is wet in that area but is so small it does not drip. sprayed carb cleaner all around carb and intake but does not effect idle. would this very small leak be the trouble? thanks!

Answer
Gary,

-it sounds like you may have a plugged
idle or main jet or main jet tube.

-If so the carb will need cleaning.
Be sure to check the small holes
in the jets carefully for blockage.

-make sure the fuel flow is good from
the gas tank and also from the fuel valve or petcock
to the carb.

-A leak may indicate a bad float bowl gasket
and/or a worn float needle/valve.

-Float level is usually set so the
bowl is quite full of fuel but not over
the gasket level.
