Motorcycle Repair: 99 RK Classic, classic question, fuel pump

Question
QUESTION: I have a twin 88 with 53K and it has been running fine. Sunday  I shut it down and the next time I went to start it, I didn't hear the fuel pump kick in. It would not start. I pushed it in to my garage and came out later to try and start it. When I turned the ignition and start/kill switch on, the fuel pump kicked on but would not shut off. It still would not start. When I try and start it now, I get nothing from the fuel pump. I noticed that on the left side of the tank, there are two fuel lines and on the forward one, the "L" fitting is loose. Should both fittings be tight?

ANSWER: They can be a little loose, as long as they dont leak. What you are going to have to do is have a dianostic run on the bike. It could be the fuel pump, or if the ignition is bad the ECM will shut the fuel pump off. Having a dianostic run is the only way to determine the problem

QUESTION: So this diagnostic run needs to be done by a shop with the software?

Answer
Yes. That is the only way you will know what the problem is. The fuel injected bikes are like the new cars. To determine what hte problem is a dianostic has to be run, or you will just be changing parts untill you find the one that is bad
