Motorcycle Repair: 81 honda cb750 carbs, honda cb750, rubber diaphragms

Question
Hi, and thanks in advance.  I have an 81 honda.  Bike runs great but just iwll not idle.  Carbs are very clean and all seats seem to be working great when i had the bowls off.  The bike will rev up great and just not idle, it will get really low and cut off. new coils and battery charged well.  I tried adjusted the idle screw (big black knob in middle of carbs) and it will go up fine,  when i get it idling about 3 grand and slowly come off the idle screw, it will run for just a second and then stall.  Am I missing something here?  Any help is appreciated, i'm running out of options.  New coils, battery, plugs, wires also.  Gas tank lined and new fuel filter.  Fresh ga, do not think it a stavation problem of fuel supply, something in the carbs, just don't know what to look for.  Thanks a lot if you can help or not.

Answer
Jason,

-Have you checked around the carb mounting
point for air leaks? could be a cracked
rubber or leaking gasket or vacuum fitting.

-check the carb slide rubber diaphragms for tears
in the rubber. Also see if they are sticky.
You can reach in the back of the carb
and see if they lift okay. (engine off)

-check your air filter and box for obstructions.

-I suggest checking the compression to see if
all the cylinders are close to the same reading.
Hopefully 130 PSI or up.

-check your valve clearance.(around .004")

are your spark plugs colored: black=too rich,
brown=good or light colored=lean?
That may be a starting point.

-on the gas tank check the gas valve or
petcock vacuum diaphragm for cracks or holes.
A carb sync may help as well.

-use fresh fuel, drain the float bowls.
-were the plug caps okay? Under 5000 ohms?
-is it running on all the cylinders?
see if all the pipes are warming up, check it before
it gets too hot, don't burn yourself!
