Motorcycle Repair: Buell Electrical trouble, air fuel mixture, ac volts

Question
Hello Mike, I own a 1999 Buell Cyclone. I rebuilt the carb recently to fix a problem. Once repaired the bike would run like crap (sputter, pop, pop, etc) So local shop said to mess with the Air/fuel mixture screw. No amount of tuning would fix it. When the battery went dead from starting and stopping I had it charged. When I put it back on it all of the sudden started and ran fine. I went on a short ride. After ten miles it died at a stop light. After five minutes it started and I rode home. It started one more time then battery dead again. I tested the Volt. Reg. with an OHM test for continuity. I did this at the round rubber cylindrical plug. I have yet to check the volts coming from the stator (other end of plug?), hopefully 60v.
So given that the bike ran fine with a charged battery leads me to believe that it did not stall out from being too rich or lean? And that could explain why the tuning was not effective initially? What symptoms does a bad stator or regulator cause? Am I on the right track?
Thank You for this service. You are keeping many a bike on the road that otherwise could not afford to be fixed and destined to collect dust in the garage for twenty years. I am in college and cannot afford the shop everytime I have a problem. So thanks again!

Robert.

Answer
First, start the bike and at the battery see what the voltage is. You should be running around 13.5 volts at 2000 RPM. If you are, then either your battery is bad or you have a bad battery wire. If not, then test the stator. It should be putting out around 60 AC volts. Make sure you are testing AC and not DC. Also do a OHMs test on the stator. If it passes then the regulator is bad. If it doesnt, then the stator is bad. It is located inside the primary.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
