Steering Column Repair: telescopic & tilt 79 corvette, turn signals, step photos

Question
Turn signals would cancel sometimes and sometimes not. Replaced switch in column and canceling cam. Same problem again. Not much play in wheel.  Could upper bearing cause this? The inner race and balls do seem loose.

Answer
Hi Lane:

I don't think the bearing will cause such a problem.  Most of the time the problem with the cancellation is the assembly of the cancel cam and telescopic section.  If the cancel cam (horn cam) is upside down, then the turn signals will not cancel the way they should.  The design is such that a 1/4 turn should cancel the turn signals in either direction.  Typically, when the upper end is installed wrong, it takes 3/4 turn to hit the cancel spot.
You will need to pay special attention to the top center position of the shaft when installing.  there should be a notch on the end of the shaft indicating such.
