I have a 1983 honda v45 magna it runs good but at the end of summer the clutch has started slipping could u tell me where to start fixing this problem  thanks tim

Hi Tim.
Have the clutchplates, friction discs and springs ever been replaced?  If not, then that is the answer to your problem.

The bike has been around for over 20 years.  As some parts get old, no matter the miles, they tend to not work like they should.  That is why the manual reccomends replacement of certain things on the bike over time intervals as well as miles intervals.  This is particularly true for clutchplates and springs when a rider has a lot of riding time doing things like slow-speed balancing (like police riders do) or a rider is not as clutch-savvy as he/she thinks they are.

In addition, if you have tried any of those "super lube" oil additives (slick 50,etc) that contain molybdenum disulfide, then that would definitely be an issue.  They are not meant for wet-sump clutches and will cause severe slippage and, eventually, no grip from the clutchplates at all.  If you have put any of that in your engine, then flush the system and replace the clutchplates and friction discs.

Start with a rebuild of the clutchbasket and your problem should go away.

Answer
Hi Tim.
Any Honda motorcycle dealership or decent bike shop can get you the parts.  Going through a dealership will be more expensive, though.  You should also be able to find them online through www.denniskirk.com or www.jcwhitney.com or just do a google search for Honda motorcycle parts and you will find hundreds of places to go online beyond those that I mentioned.
If you have never done this kind of thing before, then I suggest taking the bike to a reputable shop for the repair.  They are equiped for it as well as being able to order the correct parts to get it done.

Good luck and ride safe.
