Steering Column Repair: steering column removal, buick park ave, oxygen sensors

Question
QUESTION: how would i go to remove and replace the steering column on a 1998 buick park ave ultra with tilt  coulum.Any special tools? damage warnings?

ANSWER: Hello Fernando:

If you are going to replace the steering column, you will be dealing with the airbag system and the wiring for that as well.  Why are you changing the column?  It can probably be repaired easier than replaced and you will avoid MANY MANY troubles later.

Let me know & I can help you

QUESTION: i need to replace the passkey module and ignition lock & key transponder due to an attemted steal. A column at the salvaged yard is 165 with key and pcm, compared to new replacement of 141.02 for passkey module 53.26 lock cylinder 41.84 lock housing + the fee for resetting the pcm .At first i towed the car to the dealer and they wanted 2500!!! no way. Should i get the bcm too? It should all work right? all the other parts are coming out of one vehicle to keep everything together before it got wrecked. Thank

Answer
Fernando:
I would suggest you replace only what you need...the lock cylinder and the passlock module (even the lock housing if needed).  Then have it towed to the dealer to be reprogrammed ($75).
I would not get into replacing the column, PCM, BCM and other components that are not affected.  You are only compounding the problem by doing that as those computers also run EVERYTHING else in the car...fuel injectors, oxygen sensors, power windows, airbag systems, engine, lighting, etc.

Even if you spend $500, it's far less and much easier to fix the problem than taking stuff from a salvage car that may be worse (or different) than yours.

That's how I would do it
Good luck
