Motorcycle Repair: CT 90 Carb Issue, throttle cables, shively

Question
I picked up a CT 90 (1973).

It runs pretty strong. I rode it briefly before buying it. It has several problems. The one I'm trying to tackle first is with the Carb.

The Choke works like a throttle, and the throttle does nothing. The cable feels a little sticky but it does move but nothing happens. Moving the choke lever toward Choke revs the engine and moving it toward Open slows the engine. At full open the engine dies no matter if its warmed up or not.

What would cause the bike to respond to the choke as if it were the throttle.

I have ordered a carb kit (gaskets, jets etc) hoping that a rebuild would fix things.

Answer
Hi Terry,

If it's a butterfly type choke, the choke is restricting air intake and compensating for the throttle.

The throttle slide or valve would likely need to be almost WO or in the WFO position for this to work.

Investigate why the throttle is not working properly. Replace or repair accordingly.

I need to inspect the carburetor to accurately diagnose the problem. I suspect it's minor in nature.

Old cables may be the cause. Try lubing, re-routing, or replacing throttle cables. They must operate freely with little resistance.
