Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha Electrical, answer mark, electrical meter


Question
meter reads 6.2 volts @ 4,000 rpm, when it overcharges and I have a meter handy it reads as high as 12 volts at the lamp, but prior to last episode, I found a ground unconneted at the lamp and the lights were working minimally for 60 miles?

1980 xt500 g yamaha: replaced ignition switch with oem, replaced rectifier with oem, replaced voltage regulator with oem, replaced magneto with oem, replaced cdi box with aftermarket- hyperpak performance ignition, replaced ignition coil, cleaned all conections and grounds on wiring harness, Problem: seems to be over charging thru headlight and tail light, blowing headlamp and tail light bulb.

Answer -
Mark, put a electric meter on the battery and hold the rpm's to 4,000. hold it till the meter gives you the highest reading and give me the result.

Mark, the only thing that controls the output voltage is the regulator. if it high sometimes not always look at the battery charge lead or wire. if it is broken internal itll give the regulator a low false reading and make it over charge the system.
