Motorcycle Repair: 1200 Suzuki Bandit 1999, suzuki bandit 1999, suzuki manual

Question
Chris,
Appreciate any help you can offer.
My CDI unit went on my Bandit 1200 bike.
I bought a second hand one and fitted, the bike went OK for about a week then the same thing happened again, I have tested both units in a mates bike and they are both dead.
I checked out the Suzuki manual and tested coil resistance and pulse generator resistance, both are reading within limits.
I have got another CDI unit but I am wondering if there can be any other possible fault which is causing damage to the CDI unit.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer
Hi Ernie.

CDI unts are fairly indestructible.  The fact that a second hand unit went bad, though, is no suprise.  When it comes to electronics from salvaged bikes, you do not know how much use that unit got before you picked it up, so their lifespans are questionable.

If you are concerned about doing harm to the latest CDI that you got, then go through the proceedures and test all of the major components to make sure that nothing is shorted or failing before trying the new unit.

If this new CDI is brand new (not used), and it goes, then there is another problem that requires a shop with all of the proper testing equipment.

Good luck and ride safe.
