Motorcycle Repair: GSXR600 Clutch Problem, friction plates, handfull

Question
Hi Chris,

I have just purchased a used gsxr600 (98)and am having an issue with the clutch. The problem being it does not seem to release 100% when I have a handfull of it. I have fiddled with the adjustment on it to the point where it you have to let it almost all the way out before it will go...but even like this if i have it fully engaged it still wants to crawl along. Therefore i was sort of eliminating the actual cable? but really have no real idea...any suggestion/s would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Scott

Answer
Hi Scott.

Either the cable needs replacement, as they do stretch out a bit, over time, with use or you need to rebuild the clutch.

rebuilding the clutch isn't so hard as it seems.  Get the repair manual for the specifics, but basically, you are replacing the friction plates and springs.

HOWEVER, you should start by replacing the cable, since it is the most likely culprit as well as the cheapest and easiest fix.  If that doesn't fix it, then the clutch may need rebuilding  or have other issues.

Let me know what happens.
Good luck and ride safe.
