Motorcycle Repair: 1996 GSXR 1100, gsxr 1100, compression check

Question
Hi Chris, exhaust system looks good, intake/airbox boots look new, can't imagine where an air leak would be. Did a compression check. Cyl 2 is at 90-95lbs. All others over 120. Can't be time for rings already can it..at 17,000kms? Failed spring(s) in valve train more likely? Let me know if I'm on the right track, thanks, Dallas

Answer
Hi Dallas.

All four cylinders should be showing the same compression, or be no more than 5-10 psi apart from each other.

It does look as if you are on the right track here.
Check the  valve springs.  The repair manual has the correct specs for the compression and the spring testing specs.  You will need a micrometer to check the spring compression specs.  If the springs are all within tolerances, then the only thing left is either the rings or (least likely) burned out pistons.

It is possible that the rings blew already.  It doesn't happen too often, but it has been known to happen.  Same with the springs.

But, as I said, you are on the right track.

Good luck and ride safe.
