Motorcycle Repair: zx 7 sparkplug gapping, kawasaki zx7, noticable difference

Question
I just recently purchased a 1996 Kawasaki zx7 Ninja ans while I was warming it up I fowled a plug. I changed the plugs tody but now the bike is sluggish and misfiring a little. I didn't gap the plugs because I didn't know what the gap space should be. what is the gapping on this bike. I have NKG plugs

Answer
Hi James.

I do not have the specs on your bike.  It states on my profile that I do not keep that kind of info.  However, I will tell you that just having the plugs at their factory settings will not foul the plugs, and the make of plug won't make any noticable difference.

The repair manual will have the specs for you, and more than just the plug settings.

If the plugs are fouling, then there is a possibility of other things wrong.

How dirty is the air filter?  Is it overdue to be changed?  If it is, then change it right away.  A clogged air filter can cause the bike to run very rich, thus fouling the plugs.

Does the bike spend any time (like months at a time) during the year, effectively in storage?  If it does, then the carbs very likely need a thorough cleaning.

Is the valve gap and timing correct?  Is it overdue to be done?  That is usually at 25,000 miles and again at 50,000 miles.

Start with those things and let me know what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.
