Mike i need to give you some background first. This is a 2002 883 custom. I purshased this bike from a man in Michigan, the bike was sold in Indy. The harley dealer there was suposed to have rejetted the carb. Pipes were orignal but somwhat gutted though not very loud. On the first long ride the bike gave a problem on the last 20 mile leg after it has been shut down for a brake. When i started the bike it started fine but as i was climbing a hill i thought it would quit. I kept milking the throttle and it cleared up and no further problem during this ride. On a ride in town at a stop, bike idling great at take off it quit but restared. This acted just like a coil. I've replaced the coil and wires and rejetted the carb as follows,88xch main needle, main jet 165,low speed jet #45 and a ez adjust idle mixture screw. This bike gave no problem for about a month and now when it is hot out side and the bike is hot you can expect this from a stop and the motor idles great. What am i missing?

If you could, pull one of your spark plugs and let me know what color it is.

Mike both the front and rear cylinder plugs are sooty looking as to being too rich, last summer when i was having this problem and e-mailed this siteI was told to rchen it up? I am also sending you pictures to your address. Mike i have also been told to replace the voes. This bike only has about 3300miles on it.

Answer
Since your plugs are sooty, then you have a fouling problem and that is what is causing your problem. You changed your coil and plug wires so we can elimanate that as a cause.
I would say that the problem is the carb being jetted to rich. The best thing you can do is get a Dyno-jet kit and install it in the carb. It will jet it right and give you more throttle responce. They are easy to install and you should be able to do the work in about 1.5 hours.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
