Motorcycle Repair: tail light for Honda nighthawk, conductor wire, light switches

Question
Hello, I have a 1985 Honda Nighthawk 450, the bike is in perfect running order besides the tail light will not light up, I changed both of the brake light bulbs, and the brakes DO work, but the tail light does not come on when I turn my bike on. would a fuse have anything to do with it? any info would be great. Thank you - Richard

Answer
Hi Richard,

A fuse may be the source of the problem, though I suspect a loose, corroded, or other conductor wire problem. Maybe even a poor ground connection.

Inspect the tail/stop light socket for evidence of corrosion. Clean the socket contacts as necessary.

Trace voltage through the circuit to find the source of defects, if any. If no voltage is present, check ignition switch, wiring, and fuses.

Check brake light switches for proper adjustment and operation.
