Motorcycle Repair: oil leak, oil leaks, it250

Question
Chris I have recently purchased a 1982 IT250
Yamaha. When I was younger my father and myself were members of a reputable enduro club in which we enjoyed many years of long and challenging rides. Unfortunatley my father did all the servicing and maintenance required on both our bikes after each enduro meet. So my mechanical knowlegde is not that great. Question is on my Yamaha I have noticed oil coming out from the crankcase ( in front of gearshifter) very slowly after I ride. Where my bike sits there is a small pool of oil in the bottom of a container I have placed under the bike. Instead of continuing to top up the oil after each ride can you suggest what this problem may be and a detailed prognosis of how I can repair the leak. your help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Dave.

Unfortunately, oil leaks are part of life when you ride.  In your case, it could be a leaking seal, leaking at the gasket, loose case bolts, or even a cracked crankcase (that one, you would notice right away).

Start by tightening the case bolts.  The repair manual has the torquing specs for you.  If tightening the bolts does not help, then you could have leaking seals/gaskets.  If you have a bad gasket or seal replace it.  The repair manual will also have detailed instructions for replacing any seals or gaskets as well.

Get the repair manual.

Let me know what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.
