Motorcycle Repair: clutch, kawasaki zx9r, clutch plates

Question
I've just purchased a 95 kawasaki zx9r.  that's been sitting up for about 6 months. when I rode it.  it feels like the clutch is slipping.  the former owner said that he had the clutch changed in may 05 before he went to Korea. is there anything i can try before I change the clutch again?         thanks Rick

Answer
Hi Rick,

You can try bleeding the clutch. Otherwise, disassemble and inspect the clutch plates and measure the clutch springs. I suspect the springs are worn and were not replaced.

If fiber plates measure within service limits and metal plates are not warped, consider the following:

Using #40 Wet/Dry sandpaper, sand metal plates in a motion of inside to outside from center. Avoid sanding in a circular motion. This is a performance trick and will increase grip between the plates.

Always replace clutch fiber plates, metal plates, and clutch springs as a set.

Keep in mind that I return tech files by email. There was no email address with your question as requested.
