Motorcycle Repair: KZ1000P13 Police Special Electrical, nylon bolts, rubber insulators

Question
I recently purchased a 1994 KZ1000 PS. It had 750 original miles on it. It was in mint condition. It ran great until I lightly washed the vehicle.  A couple of days after I washed the vehicle it started misfiring or no firing on a couple of cylinders. I drove it back home around 13 miles. After removing the gas tank I found that left side coilpack that fires 1 and 4 was oozing the materials it was made from. It had two bolts close the the spark plug outlets. I first thought it was shorting out through the bolts so I replaced the bolts with nylon bolts and rubber insulators. That did not resolve anything so I replaced the coil. After re-assembling I am getting oil leaks on around the top of the  exhausts from motor vents at the valve assembly air switch and I would like to know what is causing this and will it quit?  You would think that a Police Bike would be waterproof?

Answer
Hi Michael,

Q:  "...I am getting oil leaks on around the top of the  exhausts from motor vents at the valve assembly air switch and I would like to know what is causing this and will it quit?"

A:  The reed valve cover gaskets are prone to leaking with time. The gaskets may be worn or the gasket seat areas defective. Inspect, clean, and repair accordingly.

Q:  "...You would think that a Police Bike would be
waterproof?

A:  At least waterproof and more importantly bulletproof. [smiling]
