Motorcycle Repair: 2002 Honda XR70r Dirt Bike, honda xr70r, shift linkage

Question
This question is about a 2002 Honda xr70r bike.
What would cause the bike not to go into gear? My son was riding it and everything was ok and he slid in a mud puddle. The bike layed over in the water. It kept running. He picked it up and cut it off. Then he put it in neutral and pushed it home. Since that happened it will not go into gear. I checked the oil and smelled gas in the oil. My address is phillipsclan@vista-express.com. Thank you for looking at this.

Answer
Hi Rodney,

The shift linkage may have separated or other wise become defective. You'll have to inspect the linkage for problems.

Get a copy of the service manual for more specific details.

Visit "www.bikebandit.com" to view parts microfiche.

Gas in the oil indicates that fuel flowed thru the carburetor, into the cylinder and contaminated the oil.
This can happen when the motorcycle is on it's side, when the needle valve (float valve) becomes varnished, or when debris gets trapped between the needle valve and the valve seat.

Change the oil asap. Check the carburetor float valve assy.

I'll send tech files to your email. Thanks!

Happy Holidays!
