Motorcycle Repair: Motorcycle stored and need to be ridden again, motorcycle mechanics course, suzuki gs550

Question
I have an 82 Suzuki GS550 and I stored it, rather improperly, for about a year. I want to start riding the bike again but it does not run (obviously). Before I take it in to the local motorcycle dealer/shop, I want to know more things about what it entails to get the bike running so I can have a more intellegent conversation with the mechanic. He quoted me about $750, which is about 60% of what I paid for the bike. I only put in about 50 miles to the bike before it was stored.

Answer
