Motorcycle Repair: Need Some reassurance about valve lash setting for Yamaha YMF 350 Warrior, aftermarket cam, motorcycle engines

Question
Hey there Mark!
My question is this.  I have a 350 warrior 99 yr model.  Just recently had to replace the cam and rocker arms, and I was wondering about the valve lash setting for this particular machine after doing the replacement.  The cam was an aftermarket cam by HotCams and rocker Arms Factory. Just need to know if what my brother told me is correct about setting the valve lash looser than factory specs if this is ok or not and if it isn't a good idea to do so then what setting would you recommend?  The factory specs is .002/.004 on intake and .006/.008 on exhaust.
He told me that he recommended not setting tight do to fact of being hard on cam by doing that, and said it would wear in better with lash settings loose.
Thanks for any help with this!

Answer
Hi Ray,

I respect all opinions, but I disagree with this one.

Wouldn't you want the parts to wear together from their intended positions?

Apply some assembly lube to the surfaces and the parts will break-in nicely.

I've assembled motorcycle engines that went directly to the extreme loads of roadracing with the only break-in period being assembly lube and engine warm up. Minimal or normal wear upon next tear down.

If you set the lash loose, set it to the loose side of specs.
