Motorcycle Repair: uneven exhaust temperature, honda vtx 1800, circulation problem

Question
I HAVE A HONDA VTX 1800 V TWIN. THE REAR CYLINDER
MUFFLER GETS HOTTER AND TAKES ABOUT THREE OR FOUR
TIMES AS LONG AS THE FRONT MUFFLER TO COOL DOWN
JUST RUNNING THE MOTOR ON THE KICK STAND WITHOUT
ACTUALLY RIDING THE BIKE WILL CAUSE THIS CONDITION. THE YEAR OF THE BIKE IS 2004
I DON'T KNOW IF I HAVE A WATER CIRCULATION PROBLEM TO THE REAR CYLINDER OR NOT. IT DOES NOT
APPEAR TO BE RESTRICTED IF YOU HOLD YOUR HAND OVER THE EXHAUST OF EITHER MUFFLER. IS THIS NORMAL?  THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.     TOM

Answer
Hi Tom,

This is normal for V-twin engines.

The front cylinder receives most of the air cooling from forced convection when in motion. The rear cylinder gets less air (if any) and is usually jetted a bit richer than the front to help with cooling.

The rear cylinder exhaust is not as exposed as the front and may take longer to cool or disapate heat.
