Pontiac: 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix A/C, pontiac grand prix, hood latch

Question
I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix.  My air conditioner is not blowing cool air unless my panel readings are as follows.  My readings on the panel read an outside temperature of approximately 29-31 degrees.  When it reads this temp is when my air does not work.  Sometimes, but not much lately, it will rise up to the correct temperature (like 81 degrees) and then cool air will blow.  Could it be a bad sensor, a bad fuse, does it need freon?  Do you know what the problem is?  Thank you.

Answer
The system is designed not to work at low temps like what your sensor is reading. Since your AC is working when the correct temp is shown, it does not need to be charged. The problem is most likely in the outside temp sensor. It is easy to replace. Most of the time it is located in front of the radiator, usually on the part that the hood latch is on. If you do replace it yourself, you will have to drive the car for awhile before you get an accurate reading. It wiil probably start out at whatever temp the old one was reading when you unplug it but it will slowly climb to the correct temp.
