Motorcycle Repair: Worth of Japanese 1965 Honda CB72 Hawk, honda hawk, honda cb72

Question
My brother recently purchased a 1965 Japanese version of the 1965 Honda Hawk.

The bike is in perfect shape and has 3,900 miles on it.

Would you know what this bike is worth?

Is this a rare bike?

His name is Fred Crowley and his cell # is 617-697-2597

Thanks,
Bryan

Answer
Bryan, the Japanese domestic versions varied from the US types, usually by having "winkers" (turn signals), solid (non-folding) footpegs and KPH speedometer. There were some variations called CBM72s with Dream-Style 360 degree firing crankshafts.
CB72s were just small bore versions of the CB77 305 Super Hawks, which came to the US in droves. Some 80,000 CB72-77s were sold in the US alone. Because the price between the 250 and 305s was about $25 back then, most people went for the extra 4 horsepower, so sales of CB72s were small compared to the bigger brother. There may be Japanese buyers who are more interested than US buyers.

It would be helpful to see some photos in detail to be sure that the bike is original and correct in its condition. Value could range from $2000 to $3500 or so, depending on the current demand. Serial numbers will confirm the year of production. The 250s are about 10 mph down on speed from the 305s. I see that the cell number is in MA, so that is good to know when sending out referrals for potential buyers. Send photos to me through my website:

Will try to get a call into Fred tomorrow, as I am in Hawaii and the time difference is substantial.
