Motorcycle Repair: transmission sprocket nut size, pitch gauge, 660 raptor

Question
my boy has a 01 660 raptor we are replaceing the transmission spocket and the threads on the shaft need to be chased but none of the dealers around here can tell me what size the nut is. i know it's a 18mm but no one knows the pitch 1.00 1.50, 2,2.5 before i by a die i would love to know the correct size to buy.

Answer
Hi Jeff,

I don't know the thread pitch either. If I needed to know the pitch of a thread, I would use a pitch gauge.

See the tool here: http://doityourself.com/store/6711584.htm

An alternative to buying a tool for restoring threads, is to fabricate a chaser from the OEM nut. Cut two perpendicular grooves into the nut's threads with a thin file.
