Motorcycle Repair: Drain gas, yamaha v star, experence

Question
I have a 2001 Yamaha V Star Classic 650.  I want to drain the gas from my bike (it has been sitting for about 4 months) and have little experence with motorcycles.  When I tried to start my bike it took a while to start, then once I started driving and shift into 2nd gear it stalls.  I was advised to drain the gas and put new gas in as well as some carb cleaner. Do you believe this will fix the problem?  If so could you explain to me how to do this?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Sounds like the carbs a plugged up with dirt and need to be removed and cleaned. i am not going to be able to tell you how to do it however, since I only work on harleys. Check with some of the other experts and they may be able to help you with the removel.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
