Motorcycle Repair: shifting honda shadow, shift linkage, honda shadow

is there a trick in the shifting of the honda shadow   700.  i can not seem to shift without moving shifter in and out a little . should you be able to go in and out and up and down with shifter

A problem exists with the transmission and/or shift linkage.

I recommend having a local tech inspect the problem for you. An estimate of repairs usually costs about one hour labor at the shop's service rate.
