Motorcycle Repair: 1986 Honda Shadow Transmission, metal aluminum, honda shadow

Question
Hi,
I am having transmission trouble with my 1986 Honda Shadow vt1100.  The tranny worked fine until one day it started slipping out of third gear.  This happens as i try to accelerate in third, and if i let off the gas, it will 'clunk' back into gear.  What is the first thing i should try to look at?  Is there a possibility there is a problem with the shifter pawl?  Thank you, Michael, miggoman@yahoo.com

Answer
Hi Michael,

Inspect engine oil for evidence of metal & aluminum particles.

The problem is likely the result of worn gear cogs/dogs. When the edges become rounded, sliding gears may separate from their mating gears.

Inspect the transmission gears for excessive wear.
