Motorcycle Repair: no spark on yamaha, secondary windings, continuity tests


Question
I have a 1993 Yamaha xj600 seca II all of a sudden started sputtering and missing and now has no spark. I have worked on cars for years but don't know how different this troubleshooting may be.

I took out the spark plug and tested for spark. No spark. I know that there are 2 coil type spark dischargers near the forks. and there is a spark ignitor under the seat.

How do I isolate these components to see which one is the bad component?

Hi Harold,

Test ignition and pick-up coils the usual manner. Resistance and continuity tests of the primary and secondary windings, HT leads, and plug caps.

Check the CDI or ignitor by testing with a known good unit.

Isolate parts by removing each from the circuit and test.
