Motorcycle Repair: Replacing engine bolts, suzuki gsf, broken bolts

Question
Hi Mark,
I just brought a second hand 1993 Suzuki GSF 400cc Bandit.  While taking off the oil filter cover (while doing an oil change) the last of three bolts set into the engine snapped (when I was trying to undo the nut).  The first two came off without a worry and the third snapped without much pressure at all.  It has snapped level with the nut so I cant securely fasten the cover back on.  Should I take it to a bike shop or an engine engineer or is it even possible to replace something like this myself?  Any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Gareth.

Answer
Hi Gareth,

Broken bolts can be removed at home with the right tools.

A mistake can be expensive, so don't attempt the task if you have any doubt. It may be best to have a motorcycle shop or machinist perform the task.

I need to see the engine with broken bolt to advise best method for removal. Can you email me images?

I return tech files by email. I can send files on bolt removal. Though, there was no email address with your question as requested.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
