Question - OK. How do I remove the shift shaft?

Hi Mark . I have a  2001 GSXR 750 leaking oil from the gearshift ouutput shaft. I recently landed on the left side of the bike after I was forced from the road by an inattentive driver. After getting the bike home I  found it had bled oil all over my garage floor the next day.Upon closer inspection , it seems the shaft was slightly bent upwards during impact. The oil is coming from bottom of the shaft.Damaged seal?

The problem is when I look at the shaft all I see is an external retention clip. Please don't tell me I  have to pull the entire engine to inspect and repair this leak.I'd like to fix the problem myself so I can learn more about servicing it myself. I have the tools and probably the skills necessary to fix the problem.Any schematics, exploded views, or general know how regading the gearchanger will be appreciated.

And please tell me the correct name for the part.

Sincerely,

Willie Watt
Answer -
Hi Willie,

Right, The shift shaft seal is likely damaged. Check the engine cases around the area of the seal for damages, too.

Remove the cir-clip and washers, remove the shift shaft assy., and then you'll have access to the oil seal.

Pull the old seal out, clean seal surfaces, and install new seal. Install shift shaft parts.

Send me an email address as requested. I'll return helpful tech files.

Answer
Willie,

Twice I've asked you to include your email address with your question.

Email makes my volunteer time possible. I do not have time to type lengthy replies. I'll return very detailed pre-typed tech files and weblinks that will help you. If you don't trust me, go somewhere else for help.

Get a copy of the service manual. It contains illustrated procedures for this and other repairs. It'll be the best $30 you spend on your MC.
