Motorcycle Repair: adjusting clutch, clutch adjustment, clutch lever

Question
I bought a bike from a guy and he says it is a 600 katana well it has been painted the problem is when i put the bike in neutral well it says neutral on the display the bike is still in gear so what i feel i need to do is adjust the clutch if it not broken what i am trying to do is get the engine running to use it for a second motor because what i am planning on doing is putting a 750 motor in it and using the motor now as a backup and spare motor but i want to get it running first before i take it out but what i really need to know is how to adjust the clutch to see if that is going to take care of the problem

Answer
Hi Steve,

Adjusting the clutch is a simple procedure.

Adjust the cable at the engine end until proper amount of slack is obtained.

Loosen the clutch lever lock-wheel and adjust the cable adjuster in/out to fine tune clutch cable lever play. Usually about 5mm of threads exposed, tighten lock-wheel.

The problem may not be clutch adjustment. I recommend you get a copy of the service/repair manual. The manual has illustrated procedures for adjusting the clutch and more. The manual will pay for itself with the first repair you perform.
