Motorcycle Repair: fxlr electrical, gell cell battery, lone star rally

Question
I have a 1989fxlr I have had since new about a mounth ago I replaced the battery last weakend we had the Lone Star Rally so I rode down to Galveston witch is about 70miles from my house I stopped about half way there for a few hours for a gathering of a few thousand other bikes for a charity ride bike was runing great but by the time we got to were we where going I started to smell that nasty smell like roty eggs so get stoped and check out battery it is so hot you can not touch it and also light smoke comeing from look like curcit breakers so I let it cool off after about an hour or a little les I crank it up no problems ride it about 3miles park it do the rally thing for about 3hours so we decide we need to get headed back home I go to crank my bike it chattered a second then it started up so we ride about 10 miles stop and eat.We get back on the bikes after being stoped for about 45minutes still no problems starting we ride about 20miles and its like everything dies if I let of the throttle it started to run I give her gas and it falls down dies and you can here carb sucking are like you just run out of gas knowing this is not the problem because we filled up when we ate.once I get of the road I discover I have no power lights try to start it nothing. So I manage to get to one of the curcit breakers wiggled it and got lights so I tryed to start it all she would do is chatter at the starter like battery was died.after we towed it home Ichecked the battery with a meter and says it has 13.7 volt.one other thing you may need to know it is a gell cell battery and when I tryed to start it the last time when it just chatterd it was leaking fluid from at top.what do you think is wrong

Answer
First, start the bike and see what the charging system is putting out. At the battery you should be getting a voltage of around 13.5. If its higher then you charging system is overcharging and you probaby have a bad regulator. Since your battery got that hot I would replace it. Also, I would replace the breakers if you are having to wiggle them to get thm to work.
Good luck and happy riding
