Motorcycle Repair: Harley no spark, coil resistance, electraglide

Question
Mike, Thanx up front for any help you can give me.  I have an '84 softail, evo, 4 speed, chain final.  My manual says ALL softails have breakerless ignitions, mine has points.  She was running fine when I parked it the other day and now no spark.  The points seem clean and the coil resistance checked out ok. Thinking about converting to breakerless, what, where, how much? I traded an electraglide for it couple years ago and the guy told me not to leave the key switch on too long without starting or something could blow?  I don't think I did but maybe?  Also, can you confirm this bike is rare, was told few were made in it's configuration?  Thanks again.

Answer
If you leave the key switch on you will burn up the coil. This is true for points as well as electronic.
If you want to go with electronic there is a wide varity that you can purchace. I would recommend Dyna, or Compufire. I fyou change the ignition you will have to change the coil. The points coil has to many OHMs for electronic.
To check your points, remove the wire attached to the points. Turn the key on and at the coil check both posts witha  test light. They should be hot. Check the end of the wire you disconnected. It should be hot. If they are all hot then you have a bad set of points or condencer.
There were quit a few Softtails made that year, so it is really not rare.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
