Motorcycle Repair: 1983 Kawasaki 550 shaft drive problem, kawasaki 550, alternator problems

Question
Cschweinfurth@flightoptions.com
I have just purchased a 550 shaft drive and the seller, a buddy of mine, just put in a new battery.  It started and rode great for the 1st day then it had trouble starting and now won't light up, turn over... nothing.  Do bikes have alternator problems like cars?  Am I looking at a severe electrical problem? Where do I even start, I am new with this stuff.
thanks for any help you can give me.

Answer
Hi Chris,

Q:  Do bikes have alternator problems like cars?

A:  Yes. MC's have similar charging system problems.

Q:  Am I looking at a severe electrical problem?

A:  I suspect the problem is a loose battery cable connection. It may be other, though I think the solution to the problem will be minor.

Q:  Where do I even start, I am new with this stuff.

A: You've already started by asking for assistance. Next, get a copy of the Service Manual. I recomend Kawasaki's manual over the other brands (you get what you pay for). The service manual has illustrated procedures to test, maintain and repair your MC.

Visit the following website to learn more about testing the electrical system: "www.electrexusa.com" Check out their Troubleshooting Chart.

Visit "www.kawasaki.com" and enter your MC's VIN to see the history of your MC. Also see microfiche parts views at Kaw's site.

Visit "www.bikebandit.com" to see microfiche parts views and compare parts prices.

I'll send tech files to your email.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
